A visit to our town

Introduction - City Sights - Hotels - City Map - Tourist Office

The town of Sint-Niklaas is a vibrant and modern city in the heart of Flanders (the north of Belgium). It has about 70.000 inhabitants and is a stone's throw away from major Belgian cities as Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. Sint-Niklaas is also the capital of the Waas region, which is why it has such a strong influence on the entire region. Sint-Niklaas has lots of events and activities for just about any visitor. Here's what to expect in our wonderful town.

Culture and leisure

There are three major cultural sites in Sint-Niklaas: the leading library, the theatre with a diverse and self-willed programme and the brand new cinema complex Siniscoop. The rich variety of bars, dining rooms and restaurants in the town centre and the quarter near the railway station makes Sint-Niklaas the place to be in the region. Add a few interesting museum collections and you get the perfect mix for a day out.

On the edge of town our large recreation park De Ster is waiting to greet you with a smile. It's a great place for sunbathing on a hot summerday and if you have kids they will surely love the big playgrounds they run around in.

Last but not least there's the prosperous society life: almost a thousand societies offer a great number of activities, every day of the year.

Shopping

The Stationsstraat (shopping street) during the Terrasjesdagen (days of the terraces) Our town has a big commercial appeal because of its shopping streets in the centre and the large Waasland Shopping Centre just outside the centre.

The Stationsstraat, which connects the marketplace to the railway station, is by far the most popular shopping street in the region.

This street has become even more prestigious since the railway station area has been transformed into a cosy esplanade with shops and a big cinema.

Events

The many events and activities that brighten up the town throughout the year, are appreciated by people from the whole region.

The annual Peace Festivities on the marketplace, during the first weekend of September, are a true highlight for every fan of ballooning.

Apart from this large event, the city organises two series of concerts and activities, called Summer in town and Winter in town. Other happenings you can't miss are De Ster festivities, the Walburg concerts, the artisanal weekend, Flanders volley gala and the cyclocross at De Ster.

The number of events can only increase, as we are transforming the largest marketplace in Belgium into a giant event square. Check event dates on our front page and in our site calendar.

Services centre

Ballet lesson at the dance academy Sint-Niklaas is also a regional centre for all sorts of services: over 20.000 pupils go to school in our town every day.

The art and music academies are among the largest in Belgium and the four renowned hospitals, as well as the numerous social initiatives, are taking care of the well-being in the region.

Accessibility

Sint-Niklaas is easy to reach. By car you can drive from the E17 motorway and the city Ring straight into one of the many car parks or parking lots.

Visitors coming by train, step into the heart of the town as they leave the railway station.

For bus travellers from the region there is a separate bus lane, which connects the most interesting places between the railway station and the Waasland Shopping Center. The bus is also the ideal way to visit several parts of the town on the same day.
